            Abstract:

Red grapes contain anti oxidants compound which prevent build up of fat in muscle tissue & affect the body’s response to insulin which is  a hormone responses for sugar and fat metabolism.

            Objectives:

A marker of start of diabetes is diets high in saturated fat which worsen insulin resistance, whereby cell do not respond adequately to the normal levels of insulin produce by the body. The effect of fat on insulin sensitivity is said to occur via changes to compositions of cell membranes, and particularly the phospholipids of cell membrane. The new study identifies that the consumption of a poly phenol-rich extract from grapes could change the composition of fat in muscle membrane, with a particular focus on phospholipids & triglycerides.

            Design:

It was proposed that a grape polyphenol extract modulates muscle membrane fatty acid composition and lipid metabolism in high-fat high-sucrose diet fed rats. Hence possess anti diabetic property.

            Setting or place:

Researcher from the University of Montpellier in the south of France reports this study in British Journal of nutrition.

            Participants:

Lab rats were divided into three groups: the first group was fed a standard lab rat diet, while the other two groups received a diet containing high level of fat and sugar. One of the high-fat, high-sugar fed groups received an additional extract of grape poly phenols.

            Result:

Animal receiving the grape extract had lower triglyceride levels in the cell membrane of their muscle, compared to high-fat, high-sugar fed animals. The high-fat, high-sugar diet found to alter gene expression in muscle cells, but these changes were reversed in the animal given the grape extract.

            Conclusion:

It was concluded from this study that the grape extract can lower down the accumulation of fat and sugar in the body.

In parts of Africa and India, people use a small woody climber called Gymnema to control diabetes. It is said to contain certain constituents that reduce the absorption of glucose by the intestine. It also helps in weight loss and is an appetite suppressant.

Hmmm... I don't know how I feel about animal testing, but if the only effect the little rodents had to deal with was lower fat/sugar levels, I guess it's okay.
