3 Myths about Oily Skin by Dr. Tess Mauricio:

You’ll know if you have oily skin by simple signs. These include an oily residue on a tissue when it’s pressed to your face; your skin can have sheen to it in certain lighting; you tend to break out in blackheads, or even acne.

It’s important to understand oily skin, in order to keep it as healthy as possible. As a dermatologist I find that many of my patients have certain misconceptions about their oily skin, so let’s address 3 of the main myths here.

Myth #1 I need to use an astringent type of cleanser.

So many people believe that oily skin means wet skin, and in order to clean it you need to use a cleanser that has alcohol in it to evaporate some of the wetness.  The truth is that using an astringent only causes the pores to produce even more oil.

Use an oil-rich cleanser. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but since oil and water don’t mix, when you wash off a cleanser that is oil-based, your skin itself will become cleaner.

Myth #2.The last thing my oily skin needs is more moisture.

You may feel that you don’t want to add anything more to your oily skin, such as creams and lotions.  The truth is that your oily skin can become very dehydrated, and a light-weight - oil-free – moisturizer is quite necessary.

Along with applying a moisturizer, you need to make sure to keep your body hydrated as well. This means drinking plenty of water every day. You’ve heard this over and over, and it’s true for the health of your oily skin as much as for the rest of your body.

Myth #3  Oily skin doesn't need exfoliating.

Oily skin has large pores, which is why you can easily break out with blackheads or acne. The truth is that your oily skin can use exfoliating even up to three times a week. Exfoliating will help keep those large pores open and cleaned out, preventing the clogging that ends in breakouts. You’ll want to use an oil-free exfoliator that is granulated, meaning that it has beads. Be sure to focus especially on your chin and around your nose.

One thing that most people know about oily skin that is absolutely true is that you need to do your cleansing ritual twice a day. Keep those pores clean!

Now that you know the truth about your oily skin you can have the real glow that comes from truly healthy skin.Learn more online at drtessmd
